May Moments

May always feels like the start of something special: warmer days, weekends at the lake, and the excitement of a busy new season ahead. Between spring listings, family life, and preparing The Maley House for summer guests, life feels wonderfully full this time of year. I hope you’re finding time to enjoy the simple moments and signs of summer returning too.

Style Spotlight

One of our recent listings featured a beautiful wall of built-ins framing the fireplace. The charm was already there, but thoughtful styling is what brought them to life.

The key is allowing your eye to travel naturally across the shelves so nothing feels too lined up or overly symmetrical. Stacked books, candles, bowls, baskets, and small organic touches created warmth, texture, and movement throughout the space. The goal is never perfection. It is creating a home that feels collected, layered, and lived in.

Four Things to Get Right Before the Photographer Arrives

  1. Style for the camera, not just the room. Buyers see the photos first. Pull the sofa slightly away from the wall, angle a chair toward the window, and trust that what feels slightly arranged in person will read warm and intentional on screen.

  2. Shoot during golden hour. From mid-May through August, exterior photos are best taken within ninety minutes of sunset. The light softens everything and flatters siding, brick, landscaping, and windows in a way midday light simply cannot.

  3. Lighten every textile. Heavy duvets, dark velvet, and wool throws instantly read as winter in photos. Swap them for white linen, natural cotton, or subtle stripes to create a lighter, seasonal feel.

  4. Style the shelves and mantel thoughtfully. Empty built-ins feel unfinished, while overcrowded shelves feel distracting. A few stacked books, one ceramic vessel, a leaning piece of art, and a touch of greenery are often all a room needs to feel complete.

A Note From Jill

May has always felt like my month, with celebrations stacked one after another. Mother’s Day, my birthday, and the unofficial beginning of cottage season, which honestly feels like its own holiday to me.

Our cottage sits in my small hometown, and one of the things I love most is how easily life seems to slow down there. Whether it is wandering through nearby shops for inspiration, sitting or walking by the lake, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee before the day begins, it always reminds me how important it is to have spaces that help us reset and breathe a little deeper. I hope wherever this season finds you, you are able to find your own version of that place, a porch, a garden, a walk, a lake, or even just a peaceful morning routine. We all need spaces that remind us to pause and feel inspired again.

My mom was especially on my mind this month. She loved holidays, birthdays, and really any excuse to gather people together and make life feel special. She would have turned all of May into one long celebration.

She and my dad are truly the heart behind why I built The Maley House Collective in the first place. They taught me that home is not about perfection, it is about how people feel when they walk through the door. Helping others create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and genuinely like home is the most meaningful way I know to carry their love forward.
